DJ Dwight “Chocolate” Escobar
This month's interview of the month
is DJ Dwight Escobar. Dwight Chocolate has been
a very influential Salsa DJ in the Sydney Latin
Scene and has played at many venues! This is what
Dwight had to say for TheLatinVoice HOT 10 questions!
1. How long have you been
in Australia and when did you start your latin profession?
I came here in 1997 for 6 months and I did the first
salsa gig in that time, it was at the “Olive”,
we used to call it salsa lounge. My “Latin
Profession” began when I arrived in Australia,
before that I was a professional basketball player.
I’ve always loved my music and have always
been part of the salsa scene in Caracas.
2.
What inspired you to do what you do in this country?
What inspired me to do what I do, was the fact that
when I arrived in this country I realised that there
weren’t many places with good Latin music,
especially salsa… I thought if I didn’t
make my own space and showed people what they were
missing out on, I couldn’t remain in this
place!
3.
What has been the proudest moment in your career?
“Caliente Festival” in Zurich with Carlos
Manuel and his clan, and also Juancito Martines.
“Afro Cuban ALL Stars” at the Centennial
park, at the Oprah House, “Cubanismo”
“Festival Chat’d Los Alpes” with
Alfredo de la Fe, rapping. “Le chat noir”
(the most prestigious place in Switzerland). “Oscar
de Leon” Sydney Entertainment Centre and many
more, (it would take the whole page to mention all
of them, thank god!) and you better watch out for
the 4/5th of April at the Opera House….Chocolate
coming at ya again with Alfredo Naranjo and Los
Tres de la Habana.
4.
Is this your full time profession? If not what else
do you do?
Yes it is my full time profession, however I perform
as a rapper for the ILA Familia, I also host a radio
and TV program, and I spend a lot of my time promoting
these events.
5. What's your favourite phrase
or motto?
"Que Rico PAPA!” and “AMEN”
this are two, but I used to have a slogan “A
GUARACHARRRRRRRRR” but I have a lot of copy
cats next to me and I have to bring in a new motto
every month, an exclusive for the Latinvoice.com…
The phrase of this month is “GUARACHANDIiiiiTO!”
6. Which is your favourite
band or artist?
Band, I would say… los “VAN VAN”
and many other Cuban bands. Artist, I would say
“Richi Ray and Bobby Cruz”, I like them
and am very proud of them because they don’t
have anything to say except for that they owe their
life to the Lord Jesus Christ and they still do
their thing.
7.
If you had three wishes to be granted, what would they
be?
1. I wish everybody to be safe and have eternal
life. 2. I wish for god to give me patience and
wisdom in order to encourage people into gods hands,
because I don’t have the best testimony and
what I ever I do, right or wrong the lord Christ
will always be the king of kings. 3. I would like
to have my family together; friends and some day
have kids and a cherished wife… and god to
forgive all my sins anytime!
8. What are your likes and
dislikes?
I don’t like people who bless you with their
mouths and curse you with their hearts. In also
don’t like people who cant admit the truth.
What I do like and appreciate is a truthful friendship
(and thank god I have a few).
9. What would you like
to see more or less of in the Australian Latin scene?
I would like to see people more united because when
there are divisions there will never be a dynasty.
And if we don’t support each other now, international
promoters will come and you will end up working
for them, look at the war!
10. Do you have a message
for all the latin lovers out there?
“accept the Lord Jesus Christ in your life
and you will see miracles, happiness, and even if
you were in the worst situation you could feel peace
and you are guaranteed to have eternal life, be
rich and be high in your spirit”! P.s that
is the best thing that has come into my life, that’s
why I give this advice.
