Sonja Poturica

Sonja is the promotions & Events Coordinator , Dancing Instructor and Performer for Brazilian Fantasy Productions and 2Can Dance Academy; The Latin Voice recently caught up with Sonja and this is what she had to say...

1. What inspired you to do what you do in this country?

I have a burning desire and a passion for the Latin and Brazilian Music and Culture.  When I was first introduced to the dancing, food and lifestyle that Latinos and Brazilians live, I fell in love and wanted to share this with everyone or all nationalities.

2. What's your favourite phrase or motto?

Live life while you have life to live.

3. Which is your favourite band, artist or DJ?

DJ Marsss, Marcos Moran and I love Shakira and The Corrs.

4. What would you like to see more or less of in the Australian Latin scene?

I would love to see more of International Artist touring Australia and running more workshops.

5. What has been the most memorable moment in your career?

When I first started out teaching Salsa, Merengue and Samba, there was a group of 10-20 students, who would religiously meet up every night after class and go to a Latin Event/Club, followed by drinks at a café.  We rarely ever got bed rest.

6. Of all the Latin Music Genres which one do you think has had the biggest impact in Australia’s Latin Scene and why?

Salsa.  It’s fun, creative and contagious.  Once you start learning the basics, you get so eager and anxious to want to learn more.

7. What’s you favourite Venue and why?

All the venues that I hold an event…   Why????  Well, our team of dancers, drummers, DJ’s and directors build a climate of spontaneous excitement all night.  Secondly, all the events that Alexis from Viva Magazine hold.

8. Who do you think is the most influential personality or Group in Latin Entertainment overall and why?

Marcos Moran, the director of Brazilian Fantasy Productions & 2Can Dance Academy.  Through Brazilian Fantasy, Marcos provides numerous artist and dancing instructors with deep knowledge of show business.  A lot of high profile members of the Latin community have initiated their career through his guidance.  It is through Marcos, that I learnt to teach and perform in shows throughout Australia and Internationally.

Secondly, Alexis from Viva Magazine.  Alexis is the man to tell you all the ‘What to do’ and ‘Where to go’ in the Latin Scene, through his magazine and newsletter.  Alexis has also given me encouragement, support and guidance with running events in Sydney.  You get infected by his enthusiasm to want to learn more about the Latin Lifestyle and be a part of it.

9. What do you think is the key of success to achieve your goal in Australia’s Latin Scene?

To enjoy the work that you do and never be greedy.  I am a true believer, that if you don’t enjoy the lifestyle you have and the type of work that you do, it is best to get out of it and refresh yourself in something you enjoy.  I have met quite a number of directors and managers in the Latin Community who have provided me with support and it is their unselfishness that inspires me to help more people.

10. Do you have a message for all the Latin Lovers out there?

Come to my Parties!!!!   You will love it.
