3rd SydneyLatin American Film Festival
The
Sydney Latin American Film Festival showcased
cutting edge films, documentaries and shorts
from the expansive Latin American region.
The Festival also offered an array of special
events including fiestas, guest filmmakers
and panel discussions, live music and dance
performances - something to entice every
taste.
Profits raised from
the event are directed into community development
organisations in Latin America and Australia.
As part of an extensive film program of
international features, documentaries and
shorts, the Festival is also committed to
featuring Australian and Latin filmmakers
living in Australia and creating a space for
the exhibition and celebration of hybrid
culture filmmakers.
“It’s only our third Festival, but we’re
keen to have local filmmakers contribute to
the program with either shorts, animation,
documentaries or features that have a
connection with Latin America. There are
many Spanish speaking communities living
outside of Latin America and we think it’s
important that films that relate to these
communities be included in the Festival”,
said crew member, Jorge Echevarria.
The Festival is a not-for-profit event,
which raises funds for community development
programs in Latin America. Last year the
Festival was able to support three community
development programs in Latin America and
also here in Australia.
Last year the Festival presented documentaries
and features from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil,
Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Mexico and
Peru.

La Feria de Cali
(Colombia)
25-30 December 2006
(Every year)

Each Christmas Cali enjoys the rich festival
programme that makes up one of Colombia's
most renowned national events, the Cali Fair
(Feria de Cali). The city proudly boasts the
title of Salsa capital of Colombia, if not
the world, and unlike the many large Latin
city fairs which concentrate on livestock,
this event focuses on Salsa parties and
parades.
Salsa is not exclusively a Cuban phenomenon
and Colombia has a well-established Salsa
scene. The fair's programme features a
wealth of some 50 or so salsa acts, which
can be seen performing day and night. Other
events include a beauty pageant to select
Seņorita Cali, sports competitions, salsa
and tango contests, a variety of parades and
bullfights. Whay a way to spice up your
Christmas with the heat and swing of a real
Colombian rumba...

AfroCuban Xpress

Featuring some of the
original members of 'Havana Nights' and
'Lady Salsa'!
We are fortunate to have in Australia a
group of professional and very proud Cuban
dancers and choreographers who have a
passion to conserve their heritage and share
it with all Australians. It is integral to
their existence to be able to express where
they have come from and educate others who
overall have limited or no knowledge of the
beauty and spirit that exists and flows from
Cuban Dance and Music.
The repertoire will contain representation
of the most influential African cultures,
the Yoruba (from south-western Nigeria); the
Aruba (Dahomey presently known as Benin,
Togo and Ghana); and the Congo (Bantu from
the mouth of the Congo River.
AfroCuban Express also preserves the music
and dances created by the cultural mix of
African and Spanish influences into a
uniquely Cuban expression and will include
dances such as Salsa, Mambo, Cha Cha Cha,
Son, Danzon, Pilon, Mozambique, Comparsa,
Carnival and Rumba.
Every dance will tell a story which reflects
the Cuban culture.
The Production features the talents of
professional Cuban artists, teachers and
choreographers from the national performing
arts schools and folkloric dance groups of
Cuba who have performed around the world.
This show's goal is to establish a strategic
solution through AfroCuban Express to create
public awareness on a national and
international level.

"El Parche" Most
authentic Latin Party... Colombian Style.
.JPG)
"El Parche" proved to be one of the most
authentic Latin Parties held in Australia.
What was expected to be a great night,
turned to be an amazing experience for all
the party-goers who turned up to this event.
As soon as you walked in the doors it was
like being transported to some corner of
Colombia. DJ Mao kept the crowd going
off with a great mix of the old and latest
Latin and predominately Colombian rhythms
which made Latin music so recognized around
the world, and when Australia's First
Vallenato Band "Los Compadres" took to the
stage the Party took a life of its own. The
atmosphere was so intense and unique that
once the Venue doors closed the Party
continued outside!. Organizers "Viva
Australia" are doing it all again but this
time bigger in order to Celebrate Colombian
Independence Day, so far the Date has been
confirmed for the 15th of July, so keep a
eye in The Latin Voice for more details
coming soon.
