Reggaeton is a form of urban music that became popular with the Latin American youth in the 1990s and then eventually spread to other countries in North America, Europe, Asia, and also right here in Australia.

Reggaeton blends musical influences from Jamaica like Reggae and Dancehall with those of Latin American music, such as Bomba, Plena, Merengue, Bachata and also Hip Hop and Electronica. The music also combines rapping, generally in Spanish, English and both.

Some would say that Reggaeton is similar to Spanish Hip Hop but it’s actually different because it has its own specific beat and rhythm which is called the “Dembow”.

History of Reggaeton

Reggaeton originated from Panama but the music evolved and came to prominence in Puerto Rico. It all began in the 1970s with the first reggae recordings made in Panama. Artists such as El General, Chicho Man, Nando Boom, Renato, and Black Apache are considered the first Raggamuffin DJs from Panama. The first "International" Reggaeton Hit to come out of Panama was the song "El Meneaito" produced by Luis Phillips and Gary H. Mason. During the 1980s, the rapper Vico C released Spanish-language hip hop records in his native country of Puerto Rico. His production of cassettes throughout the 1980s, mixing reggae and hip hop, also helped spread the early Reggaeton sound, and he is widely credited with this achievement.

Towards the middle of the decade, Puerto Ricans were producing their own "riddims" with clear influences from hip hop and other styles. These are considered the first proper reggaeton tracks, initially called “under,” a short form of “Underground.” DJ Playero was one of the most famous producers at the time, releasing several underground cassettes that featured early performances of some soon-to-be-famous artists like Daddy Yankee.

It has certainly been a rise to popularity for Reggaeton since those times. The name Reggaeton only gained prominence in the mid-1990s. The name was created in Puerto Rico to signify the hybrid sound, and distinguish it from the previous Spanish reggae, created from the years of mixing the different genres. Today, the music flourishes throughout Latin America.

2004 was the year that reggaeton gained widespread popularity in the United States, eventually gaining attention in many “Western” countries. This was due to N.O.R.E. introducing the genre to mainstream America with the song “Oye Mi Canto,” followed by Daddy Yankee who came out with his album “Barrio Fino” and his mega hit single “Gasolina.” Another important artist who contributed to Reggaeton's increasing popularity, especially in Europe, is Don Omar, with singles like “Pobre Diabla” and “Dale Don Dale.” Other very popular reggaetón artists include Alexis & Fido, Angel & Khriz, Nina Sky, Nicky Jam, Zion, Lennox, Rakim & Ken-Y, Voltio, Calle 13, Héctor El Father, Ivy Queen, Wisin & Yandel, Tito El Bambino and Tego Calderon.

In 2007, a movie was released called: Feel the Noise, starring Omarion Grandberry, which incorporated Reggaeton into its movie and music. Although this is good, the movie only enjoyed minimal success and was a “limited” movie, meaning it was only shown in certain places.

Rakim & Ken-Y vs. Erre XI

The newest duo to the Reggaeton genre, Erre XI, is the creation of Francisco Saldana aka Luny, so when you here that, you know they have good potential. Their popularity has been growing so rapidly that even veteran Reggaeton artists, Rakim & Ken-Y have condemned the duo as an imitation of themselves. Now that Rakim & Ken-Y have started off this new rivalry, they have also done something to add to it that is sure to hit Erre XI right where it hurts.
‘Llorare’, is a smooth flowing ballad set to be released with Erre XI’s debut album “Erre XI Los Originales” this year. It has been going around myspace for a while now and it is sure to be one of their top songs. But why does this all matter so much in this new rivalry between the two duos? Well, Rakim & Ken-Y decided to steal the song and just simply change it’s lyrics a little bit, hoping to beat Erre XI in its start to fame and glory and claiming yet another big hit for themselves. Instead of LLORARE (I will cry), the new Rakim and Ken-Y lyrics are rumored to be TE AMARE (I will love you), with other lyric changes to go along with that name.
The big thing is, is that Rakim & Ken-Y are in for a big surprise, a court-surprise. The song, LLORARE, its lyrics and music were all registered in 2007, by Mas Flow, way before Rakim & Ken-Y decided to steal it. But the even bigger thing is, is that Rakim & Ken-Y are rumored to have stolen songs from other artists as well in the past. The difference this time is that they have messed with the wrong artists and management. Francisco Saldana has already begun to pursue legal action against the duo and everyone involved!
