Watussi

One of the most exciting live bands to come
out of Sydney, "Watussi" (pronounced:
WAH-too-SEE, Cuban slang meaning ' the
most handsome man at the party’), have
sold out shows and shaken audiences with
their rocking riffs and funked-up Latin
Hip Hop since their inception only three
years ago.
Started by Colombian born Oscar Jimenez, it
wasn't long after the first gigs as a fully
formed seven piece that the wild live shows,
energizing original compositions and ability
to cross genres and rhythms saw them winning
band competitions and playing street
festivals. The mix of Latin percussion and
grooves with raw, funky guitars and bass
gives "Watussi" a unique sound and
edge that defines the experience of one of
their live shows. In fact, the audience at
"Watussi's" most recent sold out
performance at The Basement, witnessed the
band jam on stage with a 15 piece
Brazilian Samba drumming group.
With the independent release of their first
EP in November 2004 entitled "The Fling
of the Major Bling", "Watussi"
have received airplay on FBI,
2SER, Eastside Radio and Bondi
FM. One of their compositions, "Cumbiambero",
was also used in a short film released in
2004.
Fans of the band witnessed “Watussi”play
the 2005 Surry Hills Festival, rock The
Metro as part of the Funk And Soul Festival,
support Aussie Hip-Hop band ‘Bluejuice’ and
sell out The Basement three
times during their huge rise in popularity
last year.
The latest EP; “Decide Yourself”
released March 2006 is produced by Tony
Buchen (Lior, The Baggsmen, Vassy, Kid
Confucious, Bluejuice) and is currently
being negotiated for national distribution.
The EP also features a live video of the
band filmed at The Basement and The Metro.
